Hosted stay with Hinter Company
Sky and I do not get away from work nearly as often as we should, so when we had the chance to sneak up to McCall for a couple of days, I was VERY ready for it. We also used it as an early birthday celebration for Skylar, which gave me an excuse to spoil him a little and get us out of Boise for a minute.
McCall is already one of our favorite places to escape to, but instead of filling this trip with a million plans, we really just wanted to hang out together and enjoy where we were staying. And The Overlook, Hinter’s newest McCall property, made it very easy to do exactly that.
Staying at The Overlook by Hinter
I feel like there are two types of places you stay when you travel. Somewhere that is basically just where you sleep at the end of the day, and somewhere that actually becomes part of the trip. The Overlook is absolutely the second one.
It is tucked into the trees and feels really private, but you are still close enough to downtown McCall that you are not driving forever every time you want food or coffee. The house itself is SO beautiful. Lots of warm wood, huge windows, cozy textures, a really good coffee setup, and a real wood burning fireplace that immediately made me want to cancel any plans we did have.
It feels very design forward, but still comfortable. Sometimes you walk into a really pretty rental and feel like you are scared to touch anything. This was not that. It felt like somewhere you could actually settle in, make food, put your feet up, and stay awhile.
What We Actually Did
This was definitely not one of our usual trips where I have a list of dozen restaurants, shops, and random things I want us to squeeze into two days.
Hinter had games and a puzzle at the house, so obviously we started the puzzle and then became way too committed to finishing it before we left. 😂 We played games, made breakfast, had coffee, read, and spent a lot of time just looking out at the trees. The weather was cloudy and rainy while we were there too, which somehow made the whole thing even cozier.
One night we got the fireplace going, put on a movie, and just stayed in. And I know that does not sound wildly exciting, but that was kind of the point. When life is constantly busy, sitting on a couch with a real fire going and absolutely nowhere you need to be feels pretty great.
Tacos in Downtown McCall
We did leave the house at least once. 😂
Since The Overlook is so close to town, we headed into downtown McCall and grabbed dinner at Spitfire Tacos and Tequila. We did tacos, chips and salsa, and drinks before heading back to the house for the night.
That is probably one of my favorite things about this location. You still get the whole quiet cabin in the woods feeling, but you can be back in town pretty quickly when you decide you need tacos. Which, obviously, is important.
You are also close to Payette Lake, downtown McCall, Brundage, restaurants, shopping, and all of the things we normally love doing when we are up there.
A Little Early Birthday Trip for Sky
The trip was technically for Skylar’s birthday, although I am pretty sure I enjoyed his birthday getaway just as much as he did. 😂 I LOVE birthdays and making a big deal out of people, but sometimes the best gift really is just getting away from your normal routine for a couple of days.
We slept in, ate good food, hung out, finished the puzzle we became way too invested in, watched a movie by the fire, and actually had time together without feeling like we needed to be doing something else. It was simple, but honestly exactly what we needed.
This ended up being one of those trips I did not realize how much I needed until we were there. No huge itinerary, no rushing around, just McCall, tacos, games, rainy mountain views, and a cozy place to stay with my favorite person. I will absolutely take more weekends like that.
Who I’d Recommend The Overlook For
I think The Overlook would be perfect for a couples trip, birthday weekend, anniversary, girls trip, or a small group that wants somewhere a little more special than a standard hotel.
The house is beautiful enough that you actually WANT to spend time there, which makes such a difference when you are only getting away for a few days. You can still go into McCall and do all the things, but you do not feel like you have to be out exploring every second to make the trip worth it.
And if you are coming from Boise, it is close enough that you can sneak away for a couple of days without making it a whole production. If you are looking for a unique place to stay in McCall that feels cozy, private, and a little elevated, The Overlook by Hinter is definitely one to save.
