I went to Cooks & Books for the first time with my mom and we were just a few minutes in when we both looked at each other and said… we’re coming back. We ended up booking our second class almost immediately!
It’s one of those experiences that feels really intentional from the start. You’re not just showing up to follow a recipe. You’re actually learning something, spending time together, and leaving with a skill you’ll use again.
What It’s Actually Like
When you walk in, it’s cozy and makes you want to look around for a minute before anything even starts.
There are books everywhere, but not in an overwhelming way. Cookbooks, wellness reads, a little bit of everything. Then you’ve got the cooking studio set up where everything is ready for you, which makes it approachable, even if you don’t cook a ton.
The class itself is hands on, but not stressful. Alicia walks you through everything in a way that makes it easy to follow without feeling like you’re being rushed! And you actually leave knowing how to make the recipe again at home!
Why I’d Go Back (and already am)
It felt like a really easy way to do something different without overthinking it.
You can go with friends, make it a date night, bring your mom like I did, or even go solo and still feel comfortable.
And it’s not just about cooking. You’re sitting down, talking, learning something new, and actually enjoying the process!
What They Offer
There’s a lot more going on here than just one type of class
- Adult cooking classes
- Baking classes
- Gluten-free classes
- Lunch and learn sessions
- Family and kid classes
- Homeschool classes
- Tea parties
- Cookbook club
- Private events
They also have a Book Club with a Twist, which mixes conversation with a creative activity. Each group is small, so it feels much more personal and engaging!
A Little About Alicia
Alicia is the one behind everything, and it makes sense why the experience feels the way it does once you know her background
She was a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur, and has spent years working in education and wellness
So the way she teaches feels natural. It’s structured, but still relaxed. You can tell she actually cares that people leave feeling confident, not just entertained.
What to Know Before You Go
- Classes are hands on and beginner friendly
- Kids 12 and up can join adult classes with a ticket and adult
- You can go solo or with a group
- Bring a drink to have while you cook
One thing I’d recommend is booking ahead because classes are smaller and fill up pretty quickly.
Final Thoughts
I’ve done a lot of different things around Boise, and this is one I’ve already planned to do again! It’s simple, it’s fun, and you’ll walk away with a new skill. If you’ve been looking for something to do that isn’t just dinner or drinks, this is a really good option.
